Division as sharing and grouping

Division has two meanings. Sharing (partitive division) asks how many are in each group: 12 cookies shared among 3 children gives 4 each. Grouping (quotative division) asks how many groups: 12 cookies put in bags of 3 makes 4 bags. Children understand division best when they see both with objects and pictures before moving to symbols. The word problems in the pack include both kinds.

Connecting division to multiplication

Every division fact belongs to a fact family with multiplication: 6 × 7 = 42, 7 × 6 = 42, 42 ÷ 6 = 7, 42 ÷ 7 = 6. Children who know their times tables can solve division facts by asking “what times 6 makes 42?” Practising division facts alongside the matching times table makes both stronger.

The long division steps

  1. Divide — how many times does the divisor go into the first digit (or first two digits)?
  2. Multiply — multiply that number by the divisor.
  3. Subtract — subtract to find what is left over.
  4. Bring down — bring down the next digit and repeat.
  5. Remainder — when no digits are left, what remains is the remainder.

A common mnemonic is “Does McDonald’s Sell Burgers?” — Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring down. Checking by multiplying the quotient by the divisor and adding the remainder catches most mistakes.

Worked example

742 ÷ 5: 5 goes into 7 once (1), 1 × 5 = 5, 7 − 5 = 2; bring down 4 to make 24. 5 goes into 24 four times (4), 4 × 5 = 20, 24 − 20 = 4; bring down 2 to make 42. 5 goes into 42 eight times (8), 8 × 5 = 40, 42 − 40 = 2. The answer is 148 remainder 2. Check: 148 × 5 + 2 = 742.

Remainders in real life

What to do with a remainder depends on the question. If 26 children need cars that seat 4, 26 ÷ 4 = 6 R2, so you need 7 cars (round up). If you share 26 stickers among 4 children, each gets 6 and 2 are left over. If you cut a 26-metre rope into 4 equal pieces, each is 6.5 metres (a decimal). The word problems ask children to think about which answer makes sense.

Who it is for

Teachers and parents of students in grades 3–6, tutors, and older students who need to rebuild division skills. Problems were generated by script with answers calculated automatically, so the keys are consistent.

Formats

Worksheets and keys are print-ready PDFs (US Letter; they print on A4) and editable Word files.

Tips for practice

Short, frequent practice works best: ten facts a day beats a hundred once a week. Use graph paper or turn lined paper sideways so digits stay in columns for long division. Encourage estimation first — 742 ÷ 5 is a little less than 750 ÷ 5 = 150 — so students notice when an answer is far off.

Frequently asked questions

What grade learns long division?

Usually grade 4 for one-digit divisors and grade 5–6 for two-digit divisors, depending on curriculum.

Are answer keys included?

Yes, for every worksheet.

What does R mean in division?

R stands for remainder, the amount left over.

How do I check a division answer?

Multiply the quotient by the divisor and add the remainder; you should get the dividend.

Was AI used to create the worksheets?

Problems and answers were generated by script; explanations were drafted with AI assistance and checked by Kedop.
